Displays, displays, displays. We are living in the golden era of displays. As much as we miss the simpler times when purchasing electronics was easier, we are thankful we live in such advanced times. We have the freedom to choose the kind of display! That’s just outstanding.

FHD vs WQHD

But alas, if only it was as easy as picking from two or three choices! Today, we have so many screen resolutions that it gets very confusing. Is there a “best” that we can simply buy? What are the parameters we should consider to determine the right resolution? What do these resolutions even mean?

We hear you.

We understand it is really hard to keep up with advancements since we see something new all the time. This is why we decided to break it down for you. The most common questions we get are related to FHD and WQHD, and these are going to be our focus today. What is FHD? What is WQHD? Which one should we choose? Keep reading for all the answers.

FHD or Full HD

1080 hdHD is a popular, often misused term. It is the original resolution of TVs. It is usually also referred to as 720p.

Full HD, on the other hand, is 1080p and gives a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It is the “real” HD or the default HD today. Basic TVs and most smartphones offer this resolution.

WQHD

wqhdYou must have heard of QHD, which offers 4 times the resolution that HD offers. The resolution of QHD monitors or TVs is usually 2560 x 1440 pixels, and they contain 4 million pixels in total.

Now, we all know that QHD is often for wide monitors or TVs. The aspect ratio is 16:9, which is pretty wide. This is solely the reason why a few manufacturers offer WQHD, which is exactly the same as QHD. Yes, we know that just makes it confusing, but the manufacturers wanted to make the “wide” aspect explicit. It may also be referred to as a 2K display.

Note: Please don’t confuse QHD and qHD. Even though it feels small, the difference is huge. QHD offers 4 times the resolution of HD, while qHD offers 1/4th the resolution of full HD or FHD.

FHD vs WQHD

Now that you understand the terminology, this should be easy. If you go purely by resolution, WQHD is better than FHD.

But do you need to buy a WQHD display? If you are into gaming and/or your work requires awesome visuals, choose WQHD. Of course, 4K is better but not really affordable. If you are okay with a basic monitor, FHD is just fine. It totally depends on usage and requirements.

Conclusion

Purely by resolution terms, WQHD wins the FHD vs WQHD battle, but since there’s more to it than just that, we urge you to do your homework, understand what you need, and then make your purchase.
